Trending; Rape Allegation! Dorcas Shola Fapson Vs Taxify Driver (His Version)

Yesterday, actress Dorcas Shola-Fapson took to social media to call out the Taxify driver, Henry Chukwuemeka that picked her up and reveal how she narrowly escaped being kidnapped and raped by him on the night of Wednesday, 24th January. She shared that she had to use her pepper spray to defend herfelf before escaping.

Taxify has since released a statement indicating that they’re investigating the case, but the driver has also come to narrate their encounter that night, insisting that her side of the story of false.

Revealing what he alleges truly happened, Henry said:

My name is Henry Nnaemeka and I’m neither a Rapist nor a Kidnapper. This is my Story.

I’m a taxify driver/ partner, on Thursday the 25th of January 2018 between the hours of 12midnight and 1am I was on my way home from work when I received a taxify rider request from a Ibarhim Eletu Way Which was coincidentally where I was at that time and also same estate I stay, I decided to take that last trip before I go home to rest.

On getting to the pick-up location To pick up the rider (Miss Shola Fapson) she got In my vehicle and just as I started the trip I noticed there wasn’t a destination for the trip so I politely asked her for the destination to know where I’m going to and if it will be convenient for me at that time of the night but she refused to tell me and instead asked me to drive out that she will tell me later, I politely refused and asked severally for the destination but she wouldn’t tell me rather she ordered me in a harsh tone to “Move this car”! On hearing this, I was surprised why she would hold back her destination from me and also ordered me to move the car. It was at this point I told her I wasn’t going anymore, I ended the trip immediately and asked her to come down from the car since we were still at the pick-up location but to my Greatest surprise she refused to come down and then started making some phone calls in Yoruba Language to some people whom I didn’t know disclosing our location to them.

At this point, I got scared and was trying to be on the safe side so I drove the car to the front where the estate had a security light which was a few seconds from the pickup location. On getting to the safe place, I came down from the car and politely opened the door and gently asked her to come down from the car. She blatantly refused again and started with her phone calls again.
It was at this point I overheard her conversation on the phone saying she has my car keys and gave out location again to the unknown person at the other end of the phone, I felt really threatened at this point because I couldn’t understand why she would take my car keys and then disclose our location to people I didn’t know. I had to struggle with her to get my car keys from her hands. It was in the process of struggling with her, she sprayed a chemical substance (pepper spray) in my eyes. I succeeded in getting my keys from her but before I could struggle with my sight and call for help she took off and was nowhere to be found. Some concerned residents and my sisters who heard me shout and call for help came to my rescue.

It took me about 45 mins to regain my sight clearly and was taken to my apartment to get some rest only for me to wake up this morning and receive loads of phone calls from friends and family saying I’ve been labelled a KIDNAPPER AND RAPIST.

However, the issue has been reported to Taxify and the necessary steps have been taken as shown in their press release. I want to use this medium to thank you family and friends who stood with me in this bad time and also state that I respect women and I am totally against any form of abuse against women.

Thank you all.

Trending: Rape Allegation! Dorcas Shola Fapson Vs Taxify Driver (Her Version)

According to the actress, she booked a taxify ride around 11:50. During the ride, the driver noticed the trip was a card trip and insisted she change it to a cash trip. She said she had no money on her and proceeded to call another taxify driver to take her to her destination.

The first driver refused to stop for her and kept on driving into an untarred road and right in front of a brown gate.

As he opened the gate, msDsf seized the opportunity and took a hold of the key still in the ignition. The guy noticed, grabbed a hold of her and that’s when she used her pepper spray on him.

Trending; Rape Allegation! Dorcas Fapson Vs Taxify Driver

Nigerians insinuating that @ms_dsf has lied for fame is disgusting. Most especially the women! As women we should be able to stand together for what is right. What is the reasoning behind this?

Rape culture in this country is ripe and we see it everyday. From young girls and boys being molested by their own family members to lecturers in school sexually harassing students, we know these things happen. So why is it so unbelievable that a taxi driver would try to rape and kidnap her? Would it have been better if worse happened and then we know that her claims are true?

Do you remember a few months back when another taxify driver molested the breasts of one of its riders? This is nothing new. Men rape women in this country every day and get away with it.

We live in a misogynistic society where it is always the woman’s fault. Even if she wears a skirt down to her knees and a shirt that covers her breasts it’s still her fault. Does it matter what she wears? Is it the woman’s fault if a man cannot control himself? I’m disgusted, I am sad, I am tired, I am angry and I am worried for us all.

What will we teach our sons?
150 women came out to speak against Larry Nassar, he is now serving 175 years imprisonment. The first of many men who will spend the rest of their lives in jail for violating a woman. Most of you would have called them liars, no evidence, no proof. He was charged on Incidents that took place years ago!

Did you see the video of PHILANDO CASTILE the Black man who got shot in his own car by police? His girlfriend recorded the whole thing, she watched her boyfriend die in front of her. She could have been shot too, instead she recorded the entire event as proof. Because she knows the world we live in today. Evil wins over good and in this case The Woman loses to the man. In our society, the woman is the second class citizen and this must change.

1 – what was she wearing?
2 – why does she have pepper spray?
3 – how did she have time to record?
4 – why move at that time?

See questions oh! These are all the wrong questions, distracting us from what’s really important – She felt threatened, her life was in danger.

Lekki-Ikoyi Toll Fares Will Increase From Feb 1st

Lekki Concession Company Limited has announced that it will increase the toll tariffs being charged at the Admiralty Circle Toll Plaza on Lekki-Epe Expressway and the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge Toll Plaza with effect from Thursday, February 1st.

The LCC said in a statement that the upward review followed extensive consultations held with stakeholders in the Eti-Osa/Lekki-Epe Expressway of Lagos State. Although details of the new rate were not disclosed in the statement, the firm said N100 would be paid by any driver of a mini commuter bus using the Lekki-Epe toll plaza, which is an increase of N20 over the N80 currently being charged.

The Managing Director, LCC, Mr. Mohammed Hassan, said the feedback and recommendations received during the series of consultations held in December 2017 with stakeholders in Eti-Osa Local Government Area and its environs considerably influenced the new toll fares to be paid by motorists plying the expressway and the Ikoyi Link Bridge.

The LCC’s earlier attempt to raise the fares on November 8 last year had received public outcry, which made the state government to prevail on the firm to suspend the action.

Between Daddy Freeze, Stephanie Otobo and Apostle Suleiman

‘Give Us The Names Of The Politicians That Paid You’ – Daddy Freeze Fires At Stephanie Otobo"

"Nigerian OAP, DaddyFreeze has challenged Stephanie Otobo to reveal names of those who sponsored her if she is actually saying the truth.

freeze-otobo

It seems like Nigerians are doubting the geniuneness of Stephanie Otobo’s confession after she had earlier accused founder of Omega Fire Ministries, Apostle Johnson Suleman of impregnating and having sexual intercourse with her.

As usual, controversial OAP, DaddyFreeze is on the frontline as he has asked pertinent questions.

Nigerians on social media believe that Otobo might have been forced to compromise in order to end the matter in court.

Writing on social media, DaddyFreeze said: “This is wonderful news for the body of Christ.

However, to move Christianity forward, we must be able to identify these politicians and prevent them from carrying out such heinous attacks on our faith going forward.

To this end, I’ll be most obliged if you can provide us with the following.

1. The names of these politicians.

2. Account transfers to show the transactions in order to enable us trace, through BVN, the perpetrators of these acts and bring them to book.

The bank account details are very important. Let’s remember the instance where a pastor was accused of buying a Mercedes SUV for a Lady. The registration details of the car were provided as well as bank transaction details.

Thank you so much for your dedication to the propagation of his kingdom here on earth! ~FRZ

Daddy Freeze’s FiancĂ©e Reveals She Slept With Her Gay Ex-Husband Only 11 Times During Their 10-Year Marriage

The fiancĂ©e/baby mama of controversial On-Air-Personality Ifedayo Olarindepopularly known as Daddy Freeze, Benedicta Elechi, has revealed that she divorced her husband, Paul Odekinabecause he is gay.

She recounted how she had walked in on him having sex with a man in their living room and also how he had also brought one of his sexual partners home and she served them both dinner suspecting nothing.

According to her, in the ten years she was married to her husband who is the Executive General Manager of Human Resource at Total E&P Nigeria Limited, they only had sex eleven times- when he wanted them to make babies.
In an exclusive interview with LIB, she said
“I filed for a divorce from him because of his sexual perversion and there’s a point where you get to as a human being when you realise that something or what is your aim is never going to work.

Because when I signed a contract to marry him, I believed I was marrying a man that shared the same type of sexuality with me.
Don’t get me wrong, I do not have any issues with people that have different sexual orientation but when you come and say you want to get into a marriage contract with someone, you both have to share the same sexual orientation.

So when you get into that marriage and find out it wasn’t what you bargained for, it’s like you were tricked into the marriage. The marriage is a sham.

For example, we got married in 2002, I filed for a divorce 2012. For the period of 10-years that we were married, we actually had sexual intercourse just 11 times in 10 years.  He never let me sleep in his room, I have to stay in my own room.

He would only come to see me when he thinks we should make a baby.
Way into the marriage, I caught him red-handed in gay sex. I walked into him in our living room, at about 1:301:40am with a guy I didn’t really know. But he obviously walked in with that person at that time of the night, and I walked into them in our living.”

She is currently engaged to Daddy Freeze and they have a son together.

"On their way back to Nasarawa, they killed anyone they met on the way, ” ~ Punch.

"Armed Fulani men on Monday evening attacked Karmen community in Ibi local government area of Taraba State and killed a local traditional ruler.

The caretaker chairman of Ibi local government council, Hon. Bala Bako, confirmed the attack and killing in a telephone interview with our correspondent in Jalingo.

PUNCH Newspaper correspondent reports that the Fulani gunmen struck when the people of the community gathered for a security meeting.

“We have some security challenges in Ibi and we have been making efforts to ensure that ethnic groups in our domain accommodate and live in peace with one another.

“The Chief of Ibi also set up a committee which has been meeting to find solution to the security challenges, and it was in one of the meetings that the Fulani gunmen attacked and killed the traditional ruler.

“They gathered and were waiting for us for the security meeting when suddenly armed Fulani men emerged and started shooting. The local chief was killed during the attack, using Fulani sticks, by the attackers,” he said.

The Caretaker Chairman who said he mobilised security men who went and evacuated the corpse said, one person was arrested in connection with the killing and investigation into the attack was ongoing.

Speaking on the killing of eight other persons in Gishiri and Dooshima villages and one other at Danwaza village a week ago, Bako said the killers were the Fulani gunmen who attacked the neighbouring Benue State in Logo and Guma local government areas.

“We share border with Benue and Nasarawa states and most times these Fulanis crossed from Nasarawa, attack and go back, but we are trying to close all the routes they are using to cross and attack us.

“The killing in Dooshima and Gishiri around Sarkin Kudu were done by those people who attacked Benue. On their way back to Nasarawa, they killed anyone they met on the way, ” he said.

It could be recalled that attacks on several communities across Taraba in the past weeks left at least 68 people dead in Lau, 11 in Wukari and 6 in Gassol local government areas of the state" ~

Presidency disowns Twitter Handle Over Herdsmen Rampage

The Presidency on Saturday disowned a Twitter handle said to belong to President Muhammadu Buhari.
A message posted on the handle justified the killings by the herdsmen.
But the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, in a statement said evil doers and enemies of the country were the brains behind the message.
Adesina said the President stood by his earlier condemnation of the killings in parts of the country and his directive to security agencies to apprehend the perpetrators.

LAGOS BANS CART PUSHERS, WHEEL BARROW OPERATORS FROM STREETS

The Lagos State Government on Saturday announced a total ban on the operations of cart pushers and wheel barrow operators in the State, saying that their activities were inimical to the environmental cleanliness in the State.

In a statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Mr. Tunji Bello, the State Government said that with the flag off of the Cleaner Lagos Initiative (CLI), the continuous activities of cart pushers will pose a threat to the success of the initiative.
Bello said that investigations had also revealed that the cart pushers are responsible for most of the illegal dumping of waste in canals and road medians at night which causes flooding, adding that aside constituting environmental nuisance, they were also traces of security threats.

“What the State Government has discovered is that these set of people use the night to perpetrate all sorts of dastardly acts. They dump refuse indiscriminately on the median of major roads and highways. They also pose serious security threats because they use those carts to hide arms and ammunitions and hide under the guise of carrying refuse to rob unsuspecting residents”, the SSG said.
He said the State Government has finalised plans to ensure that the CLI would cover every area of the State and ensure that refuse are well packed and collected, urging residents to desist from patronising them or risk prosecution.
“The State Government has declared zero tolerance for the activities of cart pushers and wheel barrow operators. Security agencies in the State have been directed to ensure that those found still operating are arrested and prosecuted according to the State Environmental Laws.”
“The law also applies to residents who patronise cart pushers. It is an offence and the State Government would not hesitate to enforce the law to put a stop to such practice,” Bello said.

Davido's Crew Member To Face Trial

Yesterday, news broke that a crew member of singer, Davido and some Airport officials engaged in a fistcuff at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport on Thursday January 11th. According to reports, trouble started when a checkpoint staff at the airport attempted to verify some of the checked luggage with the attached tags, but, rather than allow the staff to carry out his official duty, 22 year old Umarudeen Kayode pictured right, insisted that he would not allow him to verify the luggage, which after much argument and insistence, led to fisticuffs.

Umarudeen allegedly punched the Checkpoint staff on the face, which attracted other security officials at the terminal who immediately attempted to arrest him. Rather than obey, he resisted arrest and pummeled another airport security staff attached to the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria at the baggage claim area, an Assistant Customs Comptroller was also injured.

Umarudeen was arraigned before an Ikeja Magistrate court on a 5-count charge yesterday January 12th. He was charged for assault, breach of public peace and for resisting arrest. The first charge accused him of obstructing and resisting a public officer, an offence contrary to section 117(1) and punishable under the same section of the Criminal Law of Lagos State.

“That you, Umarudeen Kayode ‘M’, on the same date, time and place, in the aforementioned magisterial district did unlawfully assault a public officer causing him harm and thereby committed an offence punishable under section 171 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2011” reads count 2.

The magistrate granted him bail in the sum of N50, 000 and two sureties in like sum. The sureties must have variable addresses within the jurisdiction of the court.

According to Sahara Reporters, Umarudeen was not able to meet the bail condition as at the time the court closed for the day. This suggests that Umarudeen will be sleeping in the prison this weekend until he perfects his bail conditions.

A video uploaded by SaharaReporters, shows Umarudeen being conveyed with the prison van out of the court premises a few minutes after 4 pm.

Disturbing Photos of ex-Super Eagles Player, Wilson Oruma

According to Complete Sports, Ex Super Eagles midfielder, Wilson Oruma, has suffered a relapse of the emotional disorder that bugged him 6 years ago after he was defrauded by a clergyman and some fake oil businessmen.

According to reports, Oruma was lured into a fake oil business in December 2012 in which he invested the sum of N1.2billion after retiring from football. He eventually lost the investment.

"He hasn’t really recovered from the emotional disorder which he suffered after he was duped. He has been to several places in search of a lasting solution, but it gets worse after a bit of improvement" his bossom friend Emakpor Dibofun revealed.
A former Nigeria international and former Chairman of Lagos State Football Association, Waidi Akanni, also added that plans by Oruma’s ex teammates to help resuscitate him to normal life is ongoing.
“We have contacted some of his colleagues whom he played with during his days at the national team and there have been positive news regarding what we are trying to do. But nothing more I can discuss publicly just yet, but he needs help. We just pray all goes well, so we can help him out of this precarious situation" Akanni said.

Oruma featured for Nigeria’s U-17, U-23 and the senior national team, winning the FIFA U-17 World Cup in 1993, the Olympic gold in 1996 and two bronze medals at the African Cup of Nations in 2002 and 2006.

Funke Akindele Yanked Off The Avenger's Cast

Funke Akindele’s name has been removed from the cast list of upcoming superhero movie, Avengers: Infinity War.
The Nollywood superstar’s name had appeared among the movies cast on Amazon-owned movie database, IMDb.
The news had created huge interest among Nollywood lovers, who were very eager to see one of theirs appear in what could be one of the highest-grossing movies of all time.
According to IMDb, Akindele was to play a member of the Dora Milaje, a team of women who serve as personal bodyguards of the Black Panther, the spiritual leader of Wakanda.
It was hailed as a monumental leap for the actress, who started out featuring in popular United Nations Population Fund-sponsored TV series I Need to Know, which ran from 1998 to 2002.
The Jenifa star never confirmed or deny the reports on her social media pages, and now, her name no longer appears on the cast list at IMDb.
Avengers: Infinity War stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Pratt, Chris Evans and more, and follows Iron Man, Thor, the Hulk and the rest of the Avengers as they unite to battle their most powerful enemy yet — the evil Thanos. On a mission to collect all six Infinity Stones, Thanos plans to use the artifacts to inflict his twisted will on reality.
Could it possibly have been a ruse to generate interest among Nigerian viewers for the movie? If so, then shame on Marvel and IMDb.
It is also possible that all she got was a scene, which didn’t make the final cut.

9ice expecting Baby No. 5 From Another Baby Mama

"9ice Reportedly Expecting 5th Child From 4th Babymama Olori Oluwayemisi" ~ NGNews

Nigerian singer, 9ice is reportedly expecting his fifth child with a 4th babymama, identified as Lagos based skin care expert, Olori Oluwayemisi.

According to multiple media reports, Olori Oluwayemisi, a skin care expert who runs Zenics Skincare in Lekki, Lagos, is pregnant for 9ice.

9ice allegedly impregnates Olori Oluwayemisi; couple expecting his 5th child  according to online reporters

Olori Oluwayemisi and 9ice are yet to confirm her pregnancy story.

You already know, 9ice has 4 children with three different women. As at 2015, 9ice was living with Olasunkanmi Ajala who is the mother of his 4th child, Michelle.

Before then, 9ice was married to Toni Payne. Their 2008 marriage produced a son named Zion.

Shortly after his marriage to ex-wife Toni Payne packed up in 2010, Gongo Aso crooner 9ice welcomed a set of twin daughters with another lady Victoria Olubukola Godis in 2011.

When the news first became public, 9ice fiercely denied the story, saying the press had made it up. Not until he proudly shared the pictures of his adorable twins one beautiful day on social media.

The “Gongo Aso” crooner would later apologize to Bukola and admit he has decided to take full responsibility of the twins needs, adding that they are ‘one of his reasons to live another day on earth’.

Victoria Olubukola Godis aka Vicky Godis is a sibling of popular OAP, Oreka Godis.

9ice would later go on to have another baby, Michelle with babymama Olasukanmi Ajala back in 2015.

But this shouldn’t come as a surprise.

In an interview with Ebony Live TV, 9ice announced his intentions to have 20 children and of course they will not come from one woman.

9ice told the TV channel that he plans to marry as many women who will help him achieve the feat.

New Year Broadcast Speech By President Buhari

The President, Muhammadu Buhari early hours of Monday delivered a national broadcast to Nigerians.
The full text of the message is thus;
I join my fellow citizens this morning to welcome and celebrate the New Year 2018. This year promises to be pivotal in our quest for CHANGE.
Unfortunately, I am saddened to acknowledge that for many this Christmas and New Year holidays have been anything but merry and happy. Instead of showing love, companionship and charity, some of our compatriots chose this period to inflict severe hardship on us all by creating unnecessary fuel scarcity across the country.
The consequence was that not many could travel and the few who did had to pay exorbitant transport fares. This is unacceptable given that NNPC had taken measures to ensure availability at all depots. I am determined to get to the root of this collective blackmail of all Nigerians and ensure that whichever groups are behind this manipulated hardship will be prevented from doing so again.
Such unpatriotism will not divert the Administration from the course we have set ourselves. Our government’s watch word and policy thrust is CHANGE. We must change our way of doing things or we will stagnate and be left behind in the race to lift our people out of poverty and into prosperity.
My address to fellow Nigerians this morning is devoted mainly to informing you about the intense efforts this Administration is putting to address our country’s huge infrastructural deficit.
We are going to make significant in-roads in advancing road, rail and power projects across the country.
The Ministry of Power, Works and Housing is one of the drivers of this Government’s commitment to renew and increase Nigeria’s stock of infrastructure in order to achieve global economic competitiveness as targeted under the Economic Recovery and Growth Plan.
With regards to Railways, we have set ourselves ambitious targets. Already in construction stage is the Lagos-Kano Standard Gauge Railway.
The line should reach Ibadan from Lagos by the end of 2019 and will carry two million passengers per year and five million tons of cargo will be transported every year giving a substantial boost to the country’s economy.
Construction of the Kano – Kaduna segment is expected to commence this year and reach Kaduna by the end of 2019. By the end of 2021 the two ends will be joined so that we will have standard gauge railway across the main North-South trading route.
The Abuja – Kaduna route will be boosted by additional rolling stock next Thursday and will be able to handle one million commuters annually.
At the same time I have approved and negotiations will be concluded in the first part of this year for the Port Harcourt to Maiduguri line covering Aba, Owerri, Umuahia, Enugu, Awka, Abakaliki, Makurdi, Lafia, Jos, Bauchi, Gombe, Yola and Damaturu. The Abuja to Itakpe line will go through Baro and terminate in Warri with construction of a new seaport at Warri.
Negotiations are also advanced for the construction of other railway lines, firstly from Kano to Maradi in Niger Republic passing through Kazaure, Daura, Katsina, Jibia to Maradi.
Secondly, Lagos to Calabar the “Coastal Rail” through Ore, Benin, Agbor, Asaba, Onitsha, Sapele, Ughelli, Warri, Yenagoa, Otuoke, Port Harcourt, Aba, Uyo and Calabar. In the next few years, all these Nigerian cities will be linked by functional modern rail systems, giving enormous boost to the social and economic life of our people.
With respect to the Abuja Capital Light Rail, progress has reached 98% completion, as at 64% completion when we assumed office. Only test runs remain before start of operations.
This train service will stimulate economic activities in the Federal Capital and provide residents with an efficient and safe transportation system. Twelve railway sub-stations around the capital over a 45.2 kilometre route will serve as a catalyst and a pull factor to the economy of the area. The Light Rail System will reduce traffic congestion and carbon emission in line with the Administration’s policy on climate change.
Management of the Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA) has been reconstituted and has been charged with a 12 week rapid intervention in road repairs to cover all the geo-political zones. Government is undertaking repairs and maintenance of 44 roads within the six geo-political zones.
Twenty five major highways will be funded under the N100b SUKUK facility. Each geo-political zone will benefit by an equal amount of N16.67b. The following major highways are to receive special attention:
a. Oyo – Ogbomosho,
b. Ofusu – Ore – Ajebandele – Shagamu,
c. Yenagoa Road Junction – Kolo Otuoke – Bayelsa Palm,

In addition, Government has approved work to start on the re-construction of Abuja – Kaduna – Zaria – Kano road which is in a state of disrepair. Work will soon start and is expected to be completed in 2019.
More Nigerians across the country are experiencing improved power supply to their homes and businesses. However, power remains a concern to this government because too many people still do not have regular and reliable supply.
The Payment Assurance Guarantee Scheme which started in January 2016 has enabled the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trader to raise so far N701 billion to assure Generation Companies of at least 80% payment for any power delivered to the national grid.
Consequently, generation has now reached 7,000MW. On December 8, 2017 the country achieved 5,155MW of power delivered to consumers, the highest level ever recorded.
Several moribund projects have been revived. Repairs of Afam Power Station added 110MW in 2017 and another 240MW will be added this year through a private investment partnership.
Katsina Power Project is now being tested and producing 10MW of power from wind for the first time in Nigeria. It should be fully operational this year.
The Zungeru 700MW Hydroelectric Power Project, stalled by court cases is due for completion in 2019. The transmission and other requirements to operate the 30MW Gurara Phase 1 Hydroelectric Plant, the 40MW Kashimbilla Hydroelectric Plant and the 215 MW Kaduna Gas/LPG/Diesel Power Plant will also be completed this year.
A landmark project, Mambilla Hydroelectric Power Project is at last taking off. This project has been on the drawing Board for 40 years, but now the engineering, procurement and construction contract for the 3,050MW project has been agreed with a Chinese joint venture Company with a financing commitment from the government of China. Completion is targeted for 2023.
As I mentioned earlier, the Transmission Company of Nigeria can now distribute all the 7,000MW that can be generated. TCN and the Niger Delta Holding Company have added 1,950MVA of 330 down to 132KV transformer capacity of 10 transmission stations and 2,930MVA of 132 down to 33KV transformer capacity of 42 sub-stations including Ikot Ekpene, Aba, Alagbon, Ajah, Ejigbo, Funtua and Zaria.
This Administration is working with the privatised distribution Companies to overcome the continuing challenges of distribution.
These massive public works should spearhead the recovery and lead millions back to employment. You will recall that it was not until last year that we got out of the economic recession into which the country had fallen as a consequence of past unsustainable economic policies which projected short-term illusory growth.
The government is slowly stabilizing the economy.
It was in order to change the steady and steep decline that we adopted the more sustainable policies and programmes captured in the Economic Recovery Plan. Diversification efforts have resulted in improved output particularly in agriculture and solid minerals sectors. The relative exchange rate stability has improved manufacturing sector performance.
We have got to get used to discipline and direction in economic management. The days of business as usual are numbered.
Two years ago I appealed to people to go back to the land. I am highly gratified that agriculture has picked up, contributing to the government’s effort to re-structure the economy. Rice imports will stop this year. Local rice, fresher and more nutritious will be on our dishes from now on.
By the same token, I am today appealing to enterprising Nigerians with ideas and unemployed graduates and other able-bodied and literate men and women with ideas not to just sit and wait for employment from the government or the Organized Private Sector. Great nations are built by enterprising people who turn their hands to anything that circumstances dictate.
In respect of political developments, I have kept a close watch on the on-going debate about “Restructuring”. No human law or edifice is perfect. Whatever structure we develop must periodically be perfected according to changing circumstances and the country’s socio-economic developments. We Nigerians can be very impatient and want to improve our conditions faster than may be possible considering our resources and capabilities. When all the aggregates of nationwide opinions are considered, my firm view is that our problems are more to do with process than structure.
We tried the Parliamentary system: we jettisoned it. Now there are shrill cries for a return to the Parliamentary structure. In older democracies these systems took centuries to evolve so we cannot expect a copied system to fit neatly our purposes. We must give a long period of trial and improvement before the system we have adopted is anywhere near fit for purpose.
However, there is a strong case for a closer look at the cost of government and for the public services long used to extravagance, waste and corruption to change for the better. I assure you that government is ever receptive to ideas which will improve governance and contribute to the country’s peace and stability.
As the electioneering season approaches politicians must avoid exploiting ethnicity and religion by linking ethnicity with religion and religion with politics. Such must be avoided at all costs if we are to live in harmony.
In this respect the rest of Nigeria could learn from the South Western States who have successfully internalized religion, ethnicity and politics.
Political discourse should be conducted with civility, decorum and in a constitutional manner. We all have a collective responsibility to strengthen our democracy and entrench the rule of law. We should draw encouragement from the series of bye-elections conducted by INEC last year which were generally violence free and their outcomes adjudged to be free and fair.
Before I conclude my address I must reassure my fellow citizens that security of life and property is still top of our government’s agenda. We have since beaten Boko Haram. Isolated attacks still occur, but even the best-policed countries cannot prevent determined criminals from committing terrible acts of terror as we have seen during the past years in Europe, Asia, Middle East, elsewhere in Africa and in America.
Our government remains determined to protect all Nigerians in line with our election pledge and promises. On behalf of all Nigerians let me offer our thanks to the Armed forces, the Police, other para-military forces and traditional authorities who are working round the clock to ensure that you and I go about our normal business in reasonable safety.
Terrorism and urban crimes are world-wide phenomena and our security forces are continuously adapting their responses to changing threats.
With regard to rampant cases of kidnappings, we are taking immediate short-term measures to combat this new evil creeping into our societies. Tighter police methods and swift and severe punishment for those proved to be engaged in kidnapping are on the way.
With respect to Niger Delta, Government is still engaging responsible leadership of the Communities to help in identifying and addressing genuine grievances of the region. Our clean-up programme in collaboration with the United Nations is making satisfactory progress.
I am grateful to all the Governors and other Political & Community leaders of the Niger Delta States for their part in bringing relative peace to the areas.
Finally let me again express my heartfelt thanks to all Nigerians who prayed for me during my illness last year. I feel deeply humbled by your prayers and good wishes and I am more determined than ever to serve you to the best of my ability.
Good morning. And I wish everyone a Happy New Year.
